Lavapiés Dragons: the club for everyone and for everyone
The Lavapiés dragons are not just another club. The multiculturalism of its members, the peculiarity of its management and its objectives, make this a more than special club.
Located in the neighborhood that gives its name to its organization, this club was born from a neighborhood initiative launched by fathers and mothers in the area, to offer an alternative to the large number of children of different nationalities who live in Lavapiés.
Jorge Bolaños, its director, has explained to us how this institution works and what it means to him. Despite having a visual disability, both Jorge and his wife, Ana Sánchez, have been involved with the Dragons to the point of sometimes "taking 10 or 12 of our players to our house so we can feed them." Both assure that this club has brought a lot of hope to a large number of people in the neighborhood, especially children.
Dragones de Lavapiés is not so focused on sports but rather its objective is to weave, from sport and competition, bonds of solidarity, respect and community, promoting dialogue between people of very diverse cultures, coming from all the corners of the planet. Its programs consist of training, support and mentoring, focused on study and the transition to adult life. Currently, children from the neighborhood of more than ten different nationalities participate in the club, many of them from African countries.
In this project, not only is soccer played: the players have a second family outdoors and an opportunity to show the multicultural coexistence of the neighborhood from a very early age.
We leave you here a short video of a report made by RTVE's La2 about dragons. Furthermore, it should be noted that there have been numerous media outlets that have echoed this organization and have decided to learn about it to give it visibility.
We wish the best to an organization with which we share many values. Football can be not only a sport but a means to promote social change and bring people together.
Come on, dragons!
